Educators act ethically and maintain the integrity, credibility and reputation of the profession.

Standard 2 is about upholding the standards of the teaching profession and acting in an ethical manner. As a teacher candidate and when I am fully certified, I will have to maintain the reputation of the profession both in the school environment and outside of it. To me, this standard means acting respectfully towards all members of the school including students, staff and admin. It means not sharing too much of my personal life online or posting inappropriate things. In terms of the students I teach, it is important that I act ethically around them and not share things like their names or other personal information about them. It is important to think of what you are doing in and out of the classroom as well as the presence you have online because it can easily get back to other educators, administration or your students. If you think it is close to the line of being unethical then you probably should not be doing it.

My artefact for standard 2 is some examples of student work from EDUC 391 practicum. My practicum experience was my first time teaching to the BC curriculum in a class for more than an hour. I acted ethically throughout the experience by not sharing student names and any work I took pictures of I made sure their names were on the back. Another aspect of standard 2 is conduct and appearance. I always make sure to conduct myself in an appropriate manner both in the classroom and outside of school. I make sure to dress professionally when I am teaching and when I am in public I take pride in my appearance.

Additionally, the reality is that we are going to see our students outside of school or see one of our colleagues’ students outside of school. I ran an event at UNBC during practicum through my work. One of the students who attended happened to be a student in a class with a teacher candidate. The student was talking about what they did in class and how much they liked it. Based on the information this student gave I knew which teacher candidate they were talking about. What we do with the students and teach is out there and this is an example of how easy it is to know what is happening in the classroom.

The artefact reflects standard 2 in that I made sure not to include student names in the pictures that I took of student work. I acted ethically by not sharing student names outside of the school. I also dressed in a professional manner throughout the experience.
